The Wild Terai
Discover Dudhwa Like Never Before
A safari isn’t just about spotting wildlife—it’s about immersing yourself in the heart of the jungle. I’m Amith Bangre, and for over 20 years, I have lived and breathed the wild, deeply understanding ecosystems, tracking big cats, and sharing the magic of the natural world.
However, the Terai landscape has been more than just a workplace for me—it has been my home, my learning ground, and my passion. I have spent a significant part of my working years living in the Terai, closely studying its ecosystem, observing the intricate behaviors of its species, and understanding the delicate balance of its flora and fauna. From the misty forests of Dudhwa to the rich wetlands of Katarniaghat, every inch of this landscape holds a story—one that I have lived and one that I want to share with you.
With me, your safari isn’t just a drive through the forest—it’s an intimate journey into its secrets. Whether it’s reading fresh tiger pugmarks, witnessing the silent grace of a fishing cat at night, or feeling the pulse of the jungle at dawn, every experience in the Terai is raw, real, and unforgettable
Dudhwa National Park – The Land of the Swamp Deer
Dudhwa National Park is a sanctuary of lush grasslands, dense sal forests, and shimmering wetlands, home to some of India’s rarest wildlife. The park shelters the endangered swamp deer (barasingha), Bengal tigers, leopards, one-horned rhinoceroses, and over 450 species of birds.
The legacy of Billy Arjan Singh, India’s legendary conservationist, is woven into the fabric of Dudhwa. His efforts to reintroduce tigers and leopards into the wild transformed this park into a thriving haven for wildlife. Walking in his footsteps, you’ll experience Dudhwa through the eyes of those who have dedicated their lives to protecting it.
Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary–Where the River Meets the Wild
Katarniaghat is a mesmerizing blend of riverine forests, open grasslands, and vast wetlands. The Girwa River, flowing through its heart, is one of the last strongholds of the Gangetic dolphin and the critically endangered gharial. The sanctuary is also home to elephants, tigers, leopards, sloth bears, and several freshwater turtle species.
Birdwatchers will find Katarniaghat a paradise, with sightings of the white-rumped vulture, lesser adjutant stork, and countless migratory birds that grace its skies. This is a landscape where land and water seamlessly merge, offering an unmatched wilderness experience.

Pilibhit Tiger Reserve–A Rising Star of Indian Wildlife
Nestled in the Terai Arc, Pilibhit Tiger Reserve is a breathtaking expanse of forests, grasslands, and wetlands that serve as a crucial habitat for Bengal tigers. Recognized for its conservation success, Pilibhit is one of the few reserves in India where tiger numbers have shown a significant rise.
This reserve is also a birdwatcher’s haven, with species like the great slaty woodpecker, Indian pitta, and red-headed vulture thriving here. The untouched beauty of Pilibhit, combined with its rich biodiversity, makes it a must-visit destination for those seeking an immersive wildlife experience.
Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary–A Hidden Gem of the Terai
Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, is a tranquil escape into nature. Its open grasslands and dense forests are home to tigers, swamp deer, and wild boars. The Jhaadi Tal wetland within Kishanpur is a hotspot for migratory birds, including storks, cranes, and kingfishers.
Unlike other reserves, Kishanpur offers a more intimate wildlife experience, away from the crowds. Its untouched landscapes and diverse ecosystems make it a perfect destination for those who seek solitude and a deep connection with nature.
